Happy Valentine’s Day, Gardening Friends,

Just wanted to send a quick reminder about 2012’s first garden meeting one week from today, Tuesday, February 21^st at 7pm in Fellowship Hall #2/Education Building on the campus of Apex UMC (100 S. Hughes St.). It’s the only one story, red brick building on campus. We will talk about what we’ll be planting this year, a spring kickoff, this year’s budget and ideas for fun events at the garden.

The meeting is open to all members and we hope to see many of you there,

Unbelievably, the countdown to the 2012 Simple Gifts Season has begun! Our first meeting is on February 21, 2012 at 7pm, on the campus of Apex United Methodist Church, in Fellowship Hall #2. This is the little RED BRICK building that sits along South Hughes Street.

The first official garden workday is on SATURDAY, MARCH 3, from 9 am-12 noon. Our Tuesday evening (5-7 pm) sessions start on March 13th.

Get out your calendar and start the countdown to garden gloves and Simple Gifts!

Hey Bugs! Look what we have...... !

Miss Ann appears to be swallowed up by an enormous cabbage

Thanks to Sandra and Ed, who volunteered to open the garden on NEW YEAR’S EVE, many garden members had a green beginning to 2012! From gigantic cabbage to carrots Bugs Bunny would surely be drawn to, the bounty was plentiful.

In addition to the personal harvest each member family has enjoyed during the 2011 season, the Simple Gifts Community Garden has grown over 1100 pounds of fresh, organic produce for the Western Wake Crisis Ministry. In tough economic times, the garden provides much needed support for so many!

As we head into the new year, may peace and joy be yours.

The final “workday” for the 2010 season was on Saturday, December 10. It was a glorious day! A multitude of minor tasks were completed as the garden was covered up (mulched) and readied for whatever Mr. Winter has in store for us. In addition to all of the members bringing home many hundreds of pounds of fresh produce, the Western Wake Crisis Center received over 1500 pounds of food this year.

Just because there Christmas bells are jingling, don’t forget the garden will keep tingling as it waits for the sun’s strength to warm and awaken it. Since memberships for the 2011 season are already rolling in, you’ll want to be sure to submit yours early! Remember, annual family membership (Jan-Dec) is only $10, so come sow, grow, harvest, and build friendships at the garden. There’s no green thumb needed; we all learn from each other as we grow along.

Hope to see you soon. And, why not plant the idea of joining the garden in a friend’s mind, or get your office mates to join forces for a “Friends Day” of volunteer work in the garden? For information, please call Anne @ 616-6659.

Potluck supper Oct.27@6pm; AUMC Fellowship Hall; #2. Bring a dish to share (it need not contain garden grown ingredients). After dinner and a short break, all who wish to stay for the 2012 planning meeting are welsome to stay. Please note: Just as in the garden, well supervised children are always welcome.

The Fall Garden is Gorgeous

As summer fades to fall, the garden’s greens will surely brighten your day! Along with collards and chard, you’ll find peas, turnips, carrots, and many other treats. Besides the bounty of the earth, the Fruit of the Spirit is also nourished in the peaceful and friendly world of the Simple Gifts Community Garden.

Why not drop by TUESDAYS from 5-7 pm, or SATURDAYS from 9-12? After a visit to the garden, you’re sure to realize that SIMPLE GIFTS are not only given; they are richly received!

When you stop by, don’t forget to wear sneakers or other shoes , with socks, that won’t give fire ants easy access to your tasty toes! Dress for the weather, and never forget your sunscreen and drinking water. The sun’s UV rays love the fall as much as we do!
